John's Role on the State Board of Education John currently serves as the vice-president of the State Board of Education. He is a strong and effective advocate for quality public education here in Michigan. John was the policy director for Michigan's Governor-appointed Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth, which has led to more Michigan young people being prepared for the post-secondary education and training essential for success in today's challenging economy. With another term, and the ability to continue his leadership role on the State of Board of Education, he will continue to push for the necessary financial support to deliver a high quality education to all Michigan young people. The importance of the State Board of Education The State Board of Education helps set the policy that holds schools to high standards and provides a comprehensive framework for student success.  This success can translate into the success of the entire state. As a board member, John Austin has worked closely with our Governor, public, private and labor leadership to make education the top priority in addressing Michigan’s economic challenges.  Also, the Board answers directly to the people on education.  Citizens deserve to have strong state board members as their advocates, making sure their priorities for education are addressed.
